Do you have a 3LA for YOUR site?

Introduction

Let's face it. Sometimes people don't want to remember much, much less type much!
How often do you find yourself typing in a long domain name such as http://www.longdomainname.com/? For us, more often than we'd like.

Successful marketing people will tell you that having a short, easy to remember acronym is the way to go. If successfully advertised, this acronym can be used in almost all aspects of the company's business to provide a quick and easy brand recognition. In certain cases, you may find your acronym actually exceeding your name in value! For example, you probably don't know what name BMW came from, do you?

Take this quick test

How many of these acronyms are you familiar with, and more importantly, of those, how many of the names that they represent do you actually know?

Acronym Name
IBMInternational Business Machines
NCRNational Cash Register Company
HBOHome Box Office
3MMinnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company
RCARadio Corporation of America
JVCVictor Company of Japan

The list could go on forever!

Now, the question is, would you rather your customers had to type in www.internationalbusinessmachines.com or www.ibm.com? The answer should be obvious.

About this site

Network Solutions and other domain registration companies offer a great service. They allow you to check and see if a domain name you are interested in is available, and if so, allow you to register it. Unfortunately, you have to spend a LOT of time picking out and testing out various names. Worse yet, with a huge portion of three letter domain names already used up, it can be an extremely time-consuming process. That's where we come in.

Twice a month, we check to find out which three-letter domain names are available. You can browse our database, and know that all the names you are looking at were free very recently. By browsing this database, you can pick out the name that seems to suit your needs the best, and verify that it is still available.

We realise that some of the names listed here are a little obscure. In order to help you get the right "hook", we offer links to pages which have similar names.
Suppose you were interested in www.3la.org. Links will be offered to other sites which have similar names, such as www.3la.com, www.4jb.com, and so on.

More information is available in the help page.

So it saves me time... But money?

Yes! Our "cost" is just an email saying "Thanks for the site, it worked for me". Many of the three letter domains that are taken up are actually not being used, but rather are for sale. Perhaps your first choice is taken by some greedy company who wants to charge you $500 for the domain name. This site may help find you an alternative which is absolutely free (of course, you must pay the registration fees).

A note on our database

We use various methods to determine the availability of a domain name. We try to reduce the number of whois searches to as few as possible. Because of this, we don't have to tax any of the whois databases out there on the Internet excessively. In fact, in the long run, this site may end up reducing the overall number of whois searches performed, because users of this site will be able to make very specific searches and pick a domain name right away, instead of spending plenty of time (and making many searches) only to find that the names are all used up.

Also, with a small percentage (2-5%) of the names our database has trouble accurately determining whether the name is free or not. Because of this some names that are free will not show up on the listing, and some that do show up on the listing aren't actually free. You can rest assured that over 90% of the names here are accurate as of the time the database was updated.
