What you need

The most important thing for you to have is an idea of the content of your site. Once you have that, the next step would be to pick out a name. When you've secured a name, it is time to develop the site, and host it. Here's a short, simplified list of what you will need:
  • Knowledge of what your site is for
  • A good domain name
  • A web server and two domain servers, OR, a company that will host your site
  • Some web talent, either in-house, or contracted
  • Some money
If you have good web talent, they will help you pick out a name for your site, unless you already have a strong name/brand you want to stick with.

You will need a safe place to put your web site on. If you don't know what web and domain servers are, then you are better off looking for a hosting service which will host the site for you. In all honesty, it is much better to have someone else host your site than have the headaches of looking after your site on a daily basis.

Web talent comes in many shapes and sizes! Expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $300 or more an hour. Remember, some companies get sites up and running for one or two thousand dollars, others for free (they do it themselves), and others spend upwards of $200,000. It all depends on your needs and wants.

Finally, you will have to pay for this. Aside from the hosting and web talent, you will also need to pay for your domain name. Your web hosting service will be able to explain this to you better. It costs about $70 for two years to secure a domain name.

How to use this site

This site was designed to be as functional and easy to use as possible. It is centered around a large listing of domain names which are up for grabs. These names are grouped together by their first letter in the directory, so all domains that start with the letter "A" are on one page, "B" on another, and so on.

You access the directory by selecting the "Index" link on the left. This brings you to an index/table of contents. At the index, you will see a list of all the letters the domain names could begin with, and, for each of those letters, how many domain names are available. This is an example:
A...............(1 .com),(353 .net),(559 .org),(251 .cc),1164 entries total
This tells you that starting with the letter "A", there is one .com address (for instance, ABC.com), 353 .net addresses (ABC.net A33.net, etc.) 559 .org addresses, and 251 .cc addresses available, for a total of 1164 possible addresses begining with the letter "A".

If you are only interested in .net addresses, you would click on (353 .net), which will show you only the .net addresses begining with the letter "A". On the other hand, if you would like to see all .com, .net, and .org addresses, click either on the letter "A", or the total count.

Note also that along the top of each page in the directory, as well as the table of contents, there is a line that looks like the following:

This allows you to quickly jump to domains starting with any letter you would like, without having to return to the table of contents. Note, however, that if you are looking at .net addresses begining with the letter "A", and click on "B", you will only be looking at .net addresses starting with the letter "B". If you would like to see everything that begins with the letter "B", then you can conveniently click "all entries".

If you find a name you think you like, but can't quite figure out how to use it just right for your site, you can click on the name. A list of similar domain names will show up, and by clicking on one of those, you can go to their web site, and see how THEY take advantage of their 3la. This may give you an idea on how you could use your acronym for your site. Remember, the important thing is to make your name memorable -- whatever it may be.

The last step in picking out your name is to ensure that it is still available. Even though this database is updated twice a month, a name may not necessarily be still available by the time you get to it. Once you've clicked on the name from the index, you will be able to perform a "whois" query.

Just what is a .cc domain?

A .cc domain is identical to a .com, .net or .org domain in every way (except, of course, that it ends in .cc!)
One good thing about a .cc domain is that the company that runs it, eNIC, will provide you with a temporary web server, and will automatically forward any email that your .cc address gets for no additional cost.
What this means to you, is that you can register a .cc address immediately, and it will be up-and-running right away with a "Site is under construction" message. You can even do this before you find a web hosting service, or even design your web site. Once everything is ready, you can just activate your real web site.

Another interesting benefig about .cc addresses is that they are very new. Because of this, many of the more favorable names are still available for you to grab. If you find a good one, don't wait! Go to eNIC and register it right away.

About the whois information

When you perform a whois query on a name, it searches one of the main Internet databases and tells you about the owner of that name. If you are in luck, there will be no owner, and at the bottom of the information provided by the whois query will be the magic words
No match for "B0Y.ORG".
(or whatever domain name you were looking for). If you see this, it means that your domain name is almost certainly still available and waiting for you to grab it! If your name has been taken, it will give you information about the name and address of the owner of the name, as well as some other technical information.

Once you've picked out a name

Once you've picked out a name, you need to secure it, so nobody else can take it.

If you've chosen a .cc address,

proceed to eNIC and sign up for the name.

If you've chosen a .com, .net or .org address,

and have picked out a hosting service, they will likely take care of the registering for you.
If you haven't picked out a hosting service, you have two choices. You can reserve the domain at, or, if you have the equipment yourself, you can register it. Go to Network Solutions to proceed in either case.

Remember, only after you register/reserve the domain name is it yours to keep!

Where to host your site

There is a certain amount of work involved in running a web site. They include things such as maintaining a web server to house your site, name servers which act like a phone book for your site, mail services if you would like to receive email, and more. There are many companies out there who will perform these services for you and many more.

Finding a good home for your web site is as important as finding a good roof to put over your own head!

Unfortunately, like buying a house, it is not the easiest thing to accomplish. There are many companies to choose from, some appear to offer you the world for almost no money at all, while others will not even give you an inch, and yet charge you an arm and a leg! The important thing is to look for a good balance, a company which may or may not be the cheapest, but will be responsive when you need their help, and will be reliable and try to make sure that your site is always available to everyone.

If you search through Yahoo!, you will find many of these web services, and even directories which tell you about them, and attempt to provide you with reviews of the price and quality of the various services. Unfortunately, you will still have many to choose from, so it may end up being a toss-up. A good rule of thumb is, once you've found a good provider, stick with them, and recommend them to friends!

What happened to the .cc domains?

Unfortunately, the way we were updating the .cc domains was less than favorable for eNIC (the supplier of .cc domains). If we are able to come up with a more convenient way that does not stress their servers too heavily, then we shall resume listing .cc domains. If you are interested in a .cc domain, please go directly to eNIC to look for one. The good news is, with .cc domains being relatively new, a lot more names are available, so it shouldn't take so long to find one.
